I think I’ve decided against building the modular synth. I started tallying up the number of modules I would want, and the cost started to look pretty scary. If I think of the synth as a tool to create music, I could better spend that money on things that would be more musical. I’m going to build a composer’s desk first — a desk with a space for a MIDI keyboard and rack-mounted synthesizers. Perhaps even a little music stand so that Anna can play piano. This will make the studio a more pleasant place to be creative in.
Speaking of which, I’ve been working on a film score demo. I’m writing it in the “Media Ventures” style, home to composers Hans Zimmer and Harry Griegson-Williams. I think I even have a part for Anna to sing. I’ll post it in the music section when I’m happy with it.

I saw your post about deciding not to build a modular synth. All’s I can say is, I would STRONGLY suggest you reconsider! I’ve got a MOTM-based/homebrew modular that I’ve been working on for a few years, now up to about 10 modules, and it is the BEST thing I’ve ever done! The MOTM kits are awesome! The range of sounds you get are unmatched anywhere. Yeah, the technology is old, but so are guitars and pianos, and they are still around. Analog rules!

I love analog, I have a Super Jupiter and an Andromeda. I just don’t think that a modular is right for the kind of music I want to make. And it started to look really expensive. Maybe someday.
