MOTM 24u Walnut Cabinet

Construction of a 24u cabinet for my MOTM Modular synthesizer.

First step was gluing the pieces together. You can't buy 12

First step was gluing the pieces together. You can't buy 12" wide walnut, so I had to glue a pair of 6" pieces together. I used 1" thick pieces. 1" in lumber terms is called 5/4, I suppose for the same reason that a 1x4 is 3/4" thick.

I decided to route an even 1

I decided to route an even 1" x 1" groove around the edge of each top and bottom piece for a solid cabinet. This made such a racket that a neighbor shouted, "What the hell is going on!?"

Another view of the routed groove. The side groove is for gluing together the sides, the front is for the mounting rails, and the back is for gluing in the back.

Glued up and clamped. I installed an IEC connector before gluing.

Close view of the walnut grain. Gluing the two pieces together went pretty wel, considering I don't own a plane to get the two sides precisely flat.

The plan for my 24u cabinet. The MOTM module is 8.75

The plan for my 24u cabinet. The MOTM module is 8.75" high. The side pieces should also be 8.75" high, or slightly more to allow room for error.

The completed cabinet, with friends. I have a few modules in there (MOTM 300 x2, mult, 2 CGS Sequencers in progress, MOTM 420 & 190). Check the studio page for the latest updates.
