New Phone

I got a really cool new phone, a Treo 650. Not only does it take photos, which is ridiculous enough, but it takes little movies. I guess it’s there for moments in life like this.

I was working the first day of the NSCA convention in Orlando, which is the most boring show in the world. Well, I’m sure there are more boring shows, like medical supplies or lightbulbs, but this is the most boring one I’m forced to go to. We’re selling cassette decks and CD players and other people sell routers, clocks and wire. But about an hour before the show closed, the fire alarm flashers went off and we started hearing this scwauking alarm like in a hotel. But then we heard something else — the fire extinguishers. Luckily they didn’t turn on over the entire show (they would have been sued for millions), but one poor bastard was not so lucky.

The sprinkler downpour

Not HD quality, but you get the idea. The sprinkler dumped water on that booth for at least 45 minutes, and it was still going when I left. It was an amazing amount of water, and it just never ended. Imagine the worst downpour you’ve ever been in, or a waterfall, and it was pretty much just over this one booth, Christie Video Solutions.

So that was pretty great, and I got to try out the video camera on my phone. Did I mention that I love my phone?

Sprinkler

Skull Kingdom

Update 3/11: Christie was back up and running today! It apears that Christie projectors take a lickin and keep on tickin. Today, we had a bomb scare. They made an announcement and told everyone to evacuate immediately. A few minutes later, they told us to disregard – it was for the South convention center, not the North Hall. Crazy show. And yet, even with this excitement, it’s still as boring as dirt.

Wow – why would the sprinklers go off over just such a small area?

Good thing it was such a small area. They probably really hurt business for that company if they can’t sell for the rest of the show. Now someone is saying a pipe burst, and someone else said there was smoke in the booth before the sprinklers went off. Lots of speculation so far.

How’d they know the bomb wasn’t big enough to get North and South?

    I wondered that myself.

What was funny about the sprinkler was that about 50-100 other geeks took little movies with THEIR cellphones. I wasn’t alone by a long shot.
